This was an overgrown and neglected garden in Hedge End. It is quite a large garden being a corner plot but it had had little attention over the months leading to its redesign. The clients brief was for a family friendly garden suitable for young children and pets, at the same time creating and inviting space and adding value to their home.
The old panel fencing was removed and replaced using new closeboard fencing. The retaining walls, steps and brick piers were removed and replaced using a new retaining wall constructed using reclaimed bricks and topped with reclaimed diamond headers. The old concrete slab patio was removed and a large York stone terrace was laid in its place. The stepping stone pathway was removed and in its place was laid a brick paved pathway in a herringbone design using Baggeridge blue bricks.
A barbeque and seating area was created using reclaimed Purbeck natural stone and a border created using reclaimed stable bricks. The seat arbour is a bespoke design which fits neatly on to the paved area. The soil levels were adjusted and a new lawn was laid using Rolawn turf. Three curved shrub beds were created, these were planted out with a large specimen Phormium and a selection of suitable plants and shrubs.
The resulting garden leaves adequate space for pets and children to play but retains a functional quality with the addition of the planting, barbeque and seating areas.
